Car speakers are the upgrade most drivers put off, usually because the factory system sounds "fine" until the day you hear a decent one. I have fitted, measured and lived with car audio for over twenty years, and the honest position is this: the speakers your car left the factory with were built to a price of a few pounds a pair. Replacing them is the single cheapest way to make every journey better. This guide is written for British buyers. It covers the two speaker types you will actually be choosing between, how to work out what fits your car before you spend anything, what the specifications mean once you strip out the marketing, what to budget, and how to fit them without wrecking your door cards. ## Coaxial or component: the only choice that really matters Every car speaker on sale falls into one of two families, and picking the wrong one wastes money. **Coaxial speakers** (sometimes called full-range) put the tweeter on a small bridge directly in front of the woofer, so the whole thing drops into the existing factory hole. One unit, one pair of wires, one afternoon. They are the sensible default for the majority of cars because they are cheap, easy and a very large improvement over a paper factory cone. **Component speakers** split the tweeter, the mid-bass driver and a passive crossover into separate parts. You mount the tweeter high — in the A-pillar, the sail panel or the top of the door — and the mid-bass low in the door. That separation is the whole point: it lifts the soundstage up to windscreen height rather than leaving vocals down by your knees. Cover the large access holes in the inner skin with deadening material or closed-cell foam so the rear wave from the speaker cannot cancel the front wave. This alone typically brings back more bass than the next tier of speaker up. **Mount rigidly.** Use an adapter ring made of MDF or ABS rather than bolting a metal frame straight to thin steel, and add a foam gasket between speaker and door so the output goes through the grille rather than into the cavity. If you are fitting components, keep the crossover somewhere dry inside the door card cavity or behind the trim, never at the bottom of the door where water collects. ## Do you need an amplifier? Not necessarily. A modern factory head unit puts out around 15 to 20 watts RMS per channel, which is enough to drive an efficient coaxial to sensible volume in a quiet cabin. You need an amplifier if you have chosen low-sensitivity components, if you regularly drive a noisy diesel or a van, or if you want clean output at motorway speeds. A modest four-channel amplifier of 50 to 75 watts RMS per channel transforms component speakers and costs less than most people expect.
